"This delightful book is an illustrated biography of Martin, aged 70 something, a farmer, river keeper and a real country person the like of which we are unlikely to see again. He was born into a working class Cotswold family and in a series of one-page 'chapters' the author records Martin's experiences in his working life, his adventures in his, on times naughty, private life and his thoughts on nature and the Unbelievable! changes in farming. It is written in Martin's Cotswold/Wiltshire accent and although this may mean that it takes some people longer to read I think it adds authenticity to his story. This book is informative, full of humour and a valuable piece of social history. I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to have a deeper insight into life in the English countryside".
"I never realised a river keeper could have such an interesting life! What a character! I found the dialect very easy to understand as long as you keep the sentence flowing; don’t dissect and analyse. This book was obviously written by someone who has a deep love and respect for the countryside and it’s inhabitants, and has singled out one of these ‘characters’ from a working class background and given him the centre stage he deserves. I adored the illustrations too. This book is the equivalent of sitting in front of a cosy fire with a cup of hot chocolate! I intend to visit Wiltshire after reading this."
"Victoria has captured the essence of traditional country life via the hilarious antics of Martin, her friend and river keeper. The language is a little tricky at first but after reading a few stories you get into the swing of it and can imagine them being told to you over the garden fence! Would definitely recommend as a lighthearted escape into the Wiltshire and Cotswolds countryside".
"Loved this book, it took me a while to get used to the use of phonetics but once I did it became a really easy read. Martin is clearly a wonderful country character and the book provides a charming insight into the ups and downs of life growing up in the Cotswolds and Wiltshire. This is a compilation of a number of short stories so is equally at home on a book shelf as it is beside the spare room bed or the loo!"
"What a lovely read of local history and stories told in a local dialect. It makes you chuckle and really appreciate this wonderful part of the world. The author has managed to capture the stories in such a heartwarming way, so for a feel good read I would definitely recommend adding this great book to your collection!"
"This book transports you to the life of Martin, its subject, a cheeky country chap and by the end of it you feel like you are one of his mates, that's the skill of the author. Really enjoyed the west country accent, added a dimension to the tale".
